M & P positioned themselves in opposing stances, each draped with transparent fabric around their hips, bathed in red light. M stood before a red panel adorned with a small painting labeled ‘LEFT,’ while P faced a black panel bearing a painting labeled ‘RIGHT.’ The performance commenced as the exclusively invited audience took their seats in the gallery. Thirty seconds after the music began, performer C entered the spotlight. He prepared the tattooing equipment and proceeded to ink the word ‘RIGHT’ in black on P’s left arm. Upon completing P’s tattoo, performer C exchanged the needle and ink tank on the tattoo machine and proceeded to inscribe the word ‘LEFT‘ in red on M’s right arm. Throughout the process, M gazed at P’s profile, who remained focused straight ahead. The performance drew to a close as performer C finished inking M and tidied the equipment before exiting the spotlight. Thirty seconds later, the lights and music were extinguished, concluding this intimate performance. The symbolism of the performance is intricate and rooted in different sources. According to the Bible, the protector remains on the right-hand side. The first man (Adam/androgen) possessed a left side that was female and a right side that was male. The Creator subsequently separated them. In Christianity, the left side is associated with the female, representing darkness, night, and the satanic, while the right side is connected to the male, symbolizing light, day, and the divine. The left side symbolizes vulnerability, insecurity, and youth, while the right side signifies power, success, and old age. Respecting God is exemplified by turning to the right side rather than the left. The left side embodies passivity, while the right side conveys activity. The left symbolizes the unchangeable past, while the right symbolizes the future. The left side is linked to disaster, while the right side is associated with prosperity. In Eastern symbolism, the relationship between the left and right differs significantly from Christian symbolism. The left side represents the sky and embodies respect, dignity, wisdom, and faith. The right side is associated with the moon, water, and feminine elements.
